How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on BonnyNest starts with one question: will this product fit your home and the way you live?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with room size

An air purifier is built for a room of a certain size. We check the room size each maker states and the clean air delivery rate (CADR), which is the airflow figure makers use for smoke, dust and pollen.

Those figures come from the makers, not from our own tests, so we label them as the maker's claims.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the filter type (true HEPA or a look-alike), how often the filters change and how many filters a unit needs. We also look at fan speeds, noise, sleep mode, controls and the warranty terms the maker lists.

We leave out ozone generators and models that make ozone on purpose.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a purifier. We look for patterns, like a loud fan on high, a bright display at night or filters that are hard to find.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A strong purifier for a large living room may score lower in a guide for a small bedroom.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers also swap filter types and model codes, so we check each model name before we write about it.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every purifier we cover.

An air purifier is a home appliance, not a medical device. We don't promise that any purifier will relieve allergies, asthma or any illness, or make the air in your home safe.

For health questions, ask a doctor. For setup, care and filter changes, follow the maker's manual.
